On Jan. 20 1961, John F.Kennedy, the ex-president of the United States delivered his Inaugural Address. While I read Kennedy's Inaugural Address, I can feel a strong feeling surging through my heart. This article is not only touching, convincing and eloquent, but also full of philosophy and humanity, which explains why Kennedy was so popular with the American people. His Inaugural Address is not only an address to the American people but to the whole world. He called loud to the world: "Can we forge against these enemies a grand and global alliance, North and South, East and West, that can assure a more fruitful life for all mankind? Will you join in that historic effort?* What a powerful and thought--provoking statement. And I think that if every president or leader can take the world as a whole and regard world affairs as his country's own affairs as Kennedy did, human beings would live in a far more happy and peaceful world. Human beings call for corporation, mutual understanding, humanity and reconciliation. Let's remember what Kennedy said in his Address: " If a beachhead of co-operation may push back the jungle of suspicion, let both sides join in creating a new endeavor, not a balance of power, but a new world of law, where the strong are just and the weak secure and the peace preserved."
In the past, the world went through two world wars in a short span of 30 years in the first half of the century and this left mankind not only unprecedented carnage but also painful and thought-provoking lessons. That's why Kennedy called for co-operation. I am not an alarmist. International situation today deserves my worries and affliction. We are living in a world of regional conflicts threatened by an uncontrolled arms race, by economic depressions, increasing poverty in developing countries and steadily deterioration of environmental conditions. Wherever we look, we face human suffering , misery and lack of freedom. When we turn on the TV or radio, we can learn that sharpening contradictions between North and South, continuous flare-ups of regional conflicts and escalation of the nuclear arms race have brought to the inhabitants of this planet a life of fear and insecurity. We can feel the pains in the hearts of Bosnian people, the desperate disappointments of the Sri Lankan people to the governments, the feeling of insecurity of the Palestinian people and Israeli people. Nearly every hour on radio we can hear reports of casualties in battles or floods or plane crashes or bombing committed by Terrorists. Human beings suffer not only from, natural calamities but from human beings themselves. Once we mankind are so proud of ourselves because we have created civilization, have conquered Nature, we have had tremendous breakthrough in science and technology and have achieved a lot in economical field. But at the same time human beings are the destroyer of the world and the causes of man's pains, misery and poverty. Let's put an end to all these scourge of war, suffering and poverty. Let's join hands meeting challenges to human survival and development. Let's solve all these problems in a spirit of human solidarity. Because we are all human beings and we share the same planet. Kennedy said in his Inaugural Address:"Let both sides seek to invoke the wonders of science instead of its terrors."
Thus the setting up of UN organizations met the time and UN is still playing a very important role in international affairs over the years. The United Nations has done much useful work in regional conflicts, eradicating colonialism, expediting arms reduction, and promoting world peace, co-operation and development. On TV you can witness UN peace-keeping forces enter Bosnia, the war-worn area, to implement the peace agreement in spite of bad weather and dangers of war. A number of them lost their lives while safeguarding peace in other countries. The united Nations provide help for the economic and social development of developing countries. However it is far from enough to just depend on the efforts of the United Nations. It needs everyone's efforts and everyone's understanding, so that hegemony and power politics can be rooted out, and that the world can be in real peace.
As a Chinese, I absolutely support China's five peaceful co-existence principles: mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, mutual non-aggression, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit. Let everyone of us contribute his efforts to create a secure and reliable environment of lasting peace and stability. Peace is the primary necessity of the world's people. Without peace, no development can be achieved. Disputes and confrontation can be settled through negotiations. Harmony can not be achieved unless we try our best to make peace through negotiations. Kennedy said: "Let us never negotiate out of fear, but let us never fear to negotiate."
Kennedy is no longer alive, but his words are still alive and his cries will be as important to our time as to his time. History is not separated from today and it is a mirror for us to know about ourselves and learn from it. We have paid a dear cost for man's greed and selfishness and have suffered a lot from wars. Let's listen to what Kennedy said to his world: "Let both sides explore what problems unite us instead of belaboring those problems which divide us." My global friends. Let's put his words into reality.
