Once in a small town in China, in a very poor neighborhood, there was a quite small house with darkness everywhere in it, apart from one room. "I want a brush and colors, mother," said a young boy, staring at his mother's face.
"I'm sorry, my child, but I don't have enough money to buy any...," said the mother with a sad voice. The tears fell from her eyes when she remembered her late husband and his great love towards his son. "What's wrong, mom? Why are you crying?" said the boy. "Nothing," said the mother.
From that day the mother looked for a part time job, besides her work in a fabric factory, so as to make her son's wish come true and help him to study in a good school.
One day, in that small room, which was almost empty of furniture, the boy was sitting and doing his homework when his mother came in looking very tired with dark circles around her eyes. "How are you, mother?" said the boy. "I'm O...OK," said the mother as she fell asleep. The boy realized then that his mother might die from that hard job, just as his father had, so he gave up his dream of being a painter.
The days passed very heavily, and the mother started to lose more weight until her weak body gave up her soul. The boy felt guilty; he thought that his mother had died because of him.
Fifteen years later, that little boy had grown into a tall, dark, well-built man with black strong, determined eyes in his sharpfeatured face. He became famous, because of a very beautiful portrait of a lady, wearing a long white dress, with vivid gray eyes, a small mouth and a low forehead, surrounded by black hair. . . .
She was his mother.
