Essays and Observations by College Students

Published by English Division
Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Fukui

How was the project started?
The Kuzuryu Memoirs (KM) is a collection of essays written annually by all the students of Department of Medicine, University of Fukui by the time they finish the general education courses. The publication of this series was started in 1982 with the first class of Fukui Medical University with a view to providing an actual communicative situation for writing English and making this a good memory of college life for the students, and for the school as well. The project has thrived to see its twenty-ninth volume.
How is the KM related with the "Young Voices of the World"?
Besides the hundred essays written by our students, the recent volumes have been crowned with a number of "Young Voices of the World", a new project developed with a view to rendering the KM publication a forum for international understanding and communication. It is hoped that, with the presentation of this home page, more active written communication will be exchanged between young folks throughout the world.
Who edits the KM?
Koju Fujieda, professor of English, started this project, and Randolph Mann, lecturer of English, had been the editor for thirteen years. Before that time, Ms. Lisa Kent, Mr. Alex Kent, Dr. Thomas E. Recchio, and Mr. William Waters helped edit the publication. Current editors are Shinji Kondo and Tetsuya Fujiwara.
How is it supported?
Incidentally, it should be mentioned that the whole KM project has been financially supported by our university, and a warm-hearted encouragement has been given to us by the faculty. Many of them are keen readers of the KM.
Can a copy of the KM be obtained by people outside the university?
Originally the KM was intended for intramural publication, but nowadays it is sent to quite a number of colleges, libraries, and international culture centers in Japan and abroad. Of course, the number of printed copies is limited, but those who want to receive a free copy are requested to make contact by e-mail or fax first of all and check if it is available. If it is, please send the necessary postage stamps, and it will be shipped. The KM is not sold in any way.
