[DESCRIPTION]

FUKUI MEDICAL UNIVERSITY

How was the university establised?
Fukui Prefecture has historically been a medically advanced district in Japan. Men like Genpaku Sugita (1773), Ryosaku Kasahara, and Tsunatsune Hashimoto devoted themselves to studying Western medicine with hopes of improving the local citizens' welfare. Out of such a tradition, Fukui Medical School, a national college, was established on Oct. 1, 1978. The school, which opened on April 1 of 1980, has been operating for 18 years, adding a postgraduate division in 1986 and a School of Nursing in 1997. Shortly thereafter, FMS became known as Fukui Medical University.

Who is enrolled?

Generally speaking, each year FMU admits about 100 new students to the Medical Course and about 60 to the School of Nursing. As of May 1, 1997, ninety-six students were enrolled in the Postgraduate courses of Morphology, Physiology, Biochemistry, and Ecology. Because FMU has an exchange agreement with Zhejiang Medical University of China, 14 Chinese graduate students are presently enrolled. In addition, other countries represented among visiting students and researchers include Bangladesh, Myanmar, Taiwan, Australia, Egypt, Thailand, the U.K. and the U.S.A.

What are the features of the university?

Besides offering the medical and nursing courses and functioning as one of the key hospitals in Fukui Prefecture, Fukui Medical University is unique with its PET program. Since Fukui Prefecture has the highest number of nuclear power plants in Japan and radiation is of great concern to the community people, the High Energy Medical Research Center was established in the university in 1994 as one of the peaceful uses of radiation. This research center aims to promote medical research related to high energy electromagnetic waves, and to advance basic and clinical studies on early diagnosis and prevention of various diseases through imaging of physiological and pathological functions of the human body by means of cyclotron and positron emission tomography (PET).
